"Dolichopodidae in copula" Two dipterans of the family Dolichopodidae (long-legged flies) in Eocene amber from Anglesea Coal Mine, Victoria, Australia. 42 Million years old. These two unfortunate insects were caught in the middle of mating, trapped in the sticky resin dripping from a tree in ancient Victoria. The tree and the resin fell and were buried with time. The resin slowly hardened into amber over tens of thousands of years, while the tree became part of the coal beds of the Anglesea Coal Mine. Published in Nature Scientific Reports.

Cetacea (Whale) Fossil from Beaumaris, Victoria, Australia. 5 to 6 million years old. The picture to the right of this is a zoomed-in view of this same fossil. This is the fractured, internal surface of the bone. Note that the cells that make up the bone marrow are larger on this side.

Mako Shark tooth – Isurus hastalis from Batesford Quarry, Victoria, Australia. Miocene in age; 5 to 23 Million years old.
